How can film aid in the teaching or learning of English?

There are numerous reasons why the film is an excellent teaching and learning tool, and teachers of foreign languages have utilized it for decades.

Motivating and pleasurable is film-based learning

Films and television programs are integral to students' lives, so it makes ideal sense to incorporate them into language classes. As a motivator, the film also makes the language acquisition process more entertaining and delightful.

The film features genuine and varied linguistics

A further advantage of utilizing film is that it provides a source of authentic and diverse language. The film provides students with examples of English used in non-classroom settings, notably interactive language – the language of everyday conversation. The film exposes students to genuine speech patterns and expressions. If they do not live in an English-speaking environment, film, and television may be their only source of real-world language input.

Diversity and adaptability

The film can add variety and adaptability to the language classroom by expanding the variety of teaching techniques and resources, thereby facilitating the development of all four communicative abilities. For example, an entire film or sequence can be used as a model for speaking, writing, and practicing listening and reading. The film can also catalyze follow-up assignments such as discussions, debates on social issues, role-playing, dialogue reconstruction, and summarising. It is also possible to add variety to the language learning classroom by screening various film forms, such as feature-length films, brief film sequences, and short films.

Unsurprisingly, many instructors want to use film with their students, and an increasing number of teachers are successfully incorporating film into their language-learning curriculum. Until recently, it wasn't easy to locate pedagogically sound film materials to help students improve their language skills through film viewing, and instructors were required to invest countless hours in creating their materials. With the advent of the internet, language teachers and their students now have access to abundant online resources. With so many available resources, it can be difficult for educators to see the forest for the trees.

Lesson planning

Numerous websites and blogs provide detailed and well-structured lesson plans based on film and television clips, short films, and viral videos, sparing the busy teacher a lot of time.
